Lane Xang Minerals Limited Company (LXML) recently held a public consultation meeting at the local level to discuss the Environmental Impact Assessment (ESIA) Report and Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan (EMMP) for the Far Western Project of the Sepon Mine, located in Vilabouly District, Savannakhet Province.
The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Chanphengsai Darasavong, Deputy Director General of the Savannakhet Provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment, and Mr. Phaymany Vongsaykham, Deputy Mayor of Vilabouly District. Participants included various government representatives, community members from surrounding areas, and relevant stakeholders such Department of Forestry – Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry; Department of Water Resources, and Department of Environment – Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; Department of Mines Management – Ministry of Energy and Mines; Representative of the Savannakhet Provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment and Savannakhet Provincial Department of Energy and Mines, Vilabouly District Office of Natural Resources and Environment, and Vilabouly District Authorities and LXML related managers and technical staffs.
The consultation aimed to provide clear information on the ESIA and ESMMP, including mitigation measures and guidelines for addressing potential environmental and social impacts. The open discussion addressed concerns raised by villagers and stakeholders, particularly regarding potential impacts on community agriculture and land use. LXML representatives elaborated on compensation plans and how the project will benefit the communities.
Following the meeting, a committee comprised of local and central government representatives participated in a site visit to the Far Western Project area.
The local public consultation concluded successfully, with all parties reaching a preliminary understanding. A follow-up public consultation meeting at the central level is scheduled to take place soon.
