Golden Star Wassa Ltd (GSWL) secured the bragging rights as the champions of the 2023 inter mines first aid and safety competition in Accra on 5th November 2023. This is the 5th time that Golden Star has won the nationals having made it to that stage of the competition 8 times.
The dedication of the Wassa first aid team and the support of management before and during the competition demonstrates Chifeng Gold and Golden Star Wassa’s commitment to safety as an integral part of our operations.
Early lead
The competition was made up of two parts: a practical section and an orals section. For the practical section, Golden Star Wassa took on an early lead securing 20 points ahead of Future Global, Asante Chirano and Ghana Manganese in that order. For the orals we established our lead by beating our closest contenders FGR with 11 points in the 2nd round. This round, in addition to our performance in the practical section established our lead and eventual winning of the competition.
Atmosphere
For the first time in many years, the supporters of the various mining companies kept the Ghana Television studios, where the competition was being aired, alive with loud cheers and songs in support of their teams, especially during the practical section of the competition.
Organisers
Ghana Chamber of Mines organises the Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition to educate mine workers, host communities and the citizenry on basic first aid tips as well as to promote basic safety measures. The competition seeks to underline the importance of safety protocols by mining companies as well as educate the public on personal health, first aid and safety practices.
The Golden Star Wassa team
The GSWL team was made up of Abigail Ankomah of the HSEC department, Eunice Kafui Kunkah Exploration department, Linda Abena Mansa Biney Geology Underground department, Emmanuel Abu Yakubu Technical Service Underground Underground and Kevin Keith Akrasi Ntow also of the HSEC department.
