Strengthening China-Ghana Mining Relations: The Launch of Association of China – Ghana Mining LBG (ACGM)
Mining is one of the highest contributors to Ghana’s economy, and China stands as its largest trade partner, making collaboration in the sector both strategic and essential. To further strengthen relationships in both sectors, the Association of China-Ghana Mining LBG (ACGM) was officially launched at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra on 3rd April 2025. Among its core objectives, the Association aims to support Chinese mining and related companies in Ghana to uphold social and culturally responsible mining and business practices while ensuring value creation for investors and stakeholders.

The founding executives of the Association include Mr. Kevin Chen, Vice President of Chifeng Gold and Chairman of Golden Star Wassa Ltd., as well as Mr. Tang Zhenjiang, Chairman of Cardinal Namdini Minng Limited of Shandong Gold. Within ACGM, Mr. Tang serves as Chairman, while Mr. Chen holds the roles of Deputy Chairman and Executive Secretary.
Mr. Chen played a crucial role in detailing and sharing the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives of both Golden Star and Chifeng Gold with Ghanaian government officials. His efforts highlighted both companies' dedication to responsible mining, emphasizing sustainable development and community investment. As Executive Secretary, Mr. Chen also pledged the Association’s commitment to development programs that will support communities in large-scale mining regions. His proactive engagement significantly contributed to the positive reception from Ghanaian ministers, who recognized the alignment of these initiatives with the country’s sustainable and environmental development goals.

Demonstrating strong governmental support, the inauguration event was attended by key stakeholders and high-ranking officials, including the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, delegated by H.E. President John Dramani Mahama; His Excellency Mr. Tong Defa, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Ghana; Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor; Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, Hon. George Opare Addo; Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Alhaji Yusif Sulemana; Deputy Minister for Finance, Hon. Thomas Ampem; Deputy Minister for Trade and Agribusiness, Hon. Sampson Ahi; and the CEO of the Minerals Commission, Martin Kwaku Ayisi.

Speaking at the event, ACGM Chairman Mr. Tang Zhenjiang emphasized the importance of the Association in fostering an unprecedented level of China-Ghana mining cooperation. He reiterated that ACGM will work closely with regulatory authorities to ensure alignment with Ghana’s vision for sustainable economic growth and environmental conservation.
In his address, His Excellency Mr. Tong Defa, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, noted that the establishment of ACGM will not only strengthen business relations but also reinforce the long-standing cooperation between China and Ghana.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, commended the establishment of ACGM and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting its initiatives. He urged the Association to fulfil its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) obligations, contributing meaningfully to Ghana’s economic and social progress.
The initial members of the Association include Chifeng Gold, Shandong Gold, Cardinal Mining, Ghana Manganese, JH Resources Exploration Ghana Company Ltd, Earl International Group, Setters Investment, FARL International Group, Huawei, XCMG, and AUXIN Ghana, etc. With these founding members, ACGM is poised to drive impactful industry collaborations, ensuring sustainable mining practices and long-term value creation for stakeholders in both China and Ghana.
